As I announced at the start of the year, I’ll be publishing a reoccurring article for my chosen ‘athlete of the month’. For Feb the athlete of the month is… Monrique Goliath
I’ve really been impressed by his dedication and discipline, since the very start of his training plan. He consistently hits his sessions and very rarely misses any. This is evident in the results he has shown since the start of us working together.
He has done a solo 5km time trail over the past few weeks and is making progression each week. His last 4 weeks have been as follows;
– 18:51
– 18: 39
– 17:55
– 17:01
What’s next? You would be brave to bet against him cracking that magical sub 17 min 5km barrier soon.
Another reason why I have chosen Monrique this month is the way he paces his progression runs. These runs are never easy to get right, starting off at a slower pace and increasing every km, until eventually finishing off at your fastest pace. It’s so easy to go too fast too soon or leave a lot in the tank at the end, but he seems to nail his pacing and get this right just about every time he does this session.
We played around with his training, tweaking things here and there, seeing how his body would react and we quickly realized that he copes better with higher mileage weeks. Everyone is different but it’s good to test things within your training to see what works best for you.
It’s a pity him and the rest of the SA runners are stuck in complete lock-down for the at least the next 16 days, but I have no doubt you’ll come out of lock-down firing! Let the progress continue!
Who will be the athlete of the month for April?
