The Athlete of the month, for the month March is.... Heidi Du Plessis
Heidi initially joined with the main goal being Comrades marathon! Much like me, this race will always have a special place in her heart and one she’ll definitely be targeting again in the future. Afterall it is known as ‘The Ultimate Human Race’ and rightly so!
However, having been cancelled for the past 2 years, our goals and training had to be adapted too. Heidi has shown some great resilience to shift her focus and train for other races. The next of which is a summer marathon. Can’t wait to see what she can do, having recently come off her biggest milage week yet, at just over 100kms. Filled with loads of quality too. Finishing the week off with a comfortable 10km time trail in sub 43 minutes.
We’ve all had our challenges, and it’s been a tough start to the year, especially for Heidi. She moved to a new country, changes houses, jobs, whilst being a mom of two and juggling to try fit the training in-between all of this. I’ve always said to her that running is important, but other things in life are more important. Initially with everything going on, she understandably just couldn’t find the time to hit all of her session. But we both knew the time would come where things would settle down and she’d be able to get back into the swing of things.
After her first ever 100km+ week last week, I can confidently say that life has allowed her to get her running mojo back and it’s great to see! One or two more weeks of this sort of training and she’ll be in tip top shape for her targeted races to come, one of which is Milton Keynes marathon..
Congrats on getting through the harder times. We can all learn from this, that if you get through these times, then there are brighter times ahead. In this sport, what you put in, is what you get out. Can’t wait to see what the rest of this year has in store for Heidi!
